irony

We complain of the heat

and yet

sit in rooms cooled by air-conditioning

that lead to rise in the very heat

that we complain of.

We eat junk food

spending hard-earned money

to take in harmful calories

that we then pay money in the gym

to burn.

We work long

hard hours

to make good money

that we can spend on experiences

that we do not have time for

because we work long hard hours.

We put signboards saying

development work in progress

where construction activity is going on

but leave more destruction

in its wake.

We manufacture medicines

for the health of our people

discharging the waste affluent

into the rivers, polluting them

leading to conditions of ill-health

We strive for peace

to attain which

we fight wars

thinking the destruction they cause

is a precursor to lasting peace.

We think we are smart

but the ironies in our lives

make me think

we are foolish

to think we are smart.
